The most reliable car brands 2024

US According to JD Power, Lexus and Toyota are the leading brands in terms of reliability, but the error index per 100 vehicles in the US has increased compared to the previous year.

According to a study on vehicle reliability in the US conducted by JD Power in 2024 (surveying owners of 2021 model years), Lexus and Toyota are the two brands with the highest scores for reliability. In terms of car models, the Porsche 718 (Boxster and Cayman) is the most reliable model. In addition, the study also shows that across all brands in general, car owners are experiencing more problems after three years of ownership.

The average error index per 100 vehicles (problems per 100 - PP100) released by JD Power this year is 190, an increase of 4 PP100 compared to the 2023 study (based on 2020 vehicle models). Additionally, the rate of problems occurring between the first 90 days and three years of ownership increased to 17%, up from 12% in 2023. Tabled below are the 10 brands with the fewest problems:

The top 5 automakers according to JD Power's rankings are Lexus (135 PP100), Toyota (147 PP100), Buick (149 PP100), Chevrolet and Mini tied (174 PP100). Porsche, Mazda, Kia, BMW, Dodge and Jeep followed, all at or below the average of 190 PP100.

Those above the average PP100 are Cadillac, Hyundai, Subaru, Nissan, Genesis, Ram, GMC, Honda, Acura, Mercedes, Infiniti, Ford, Volvo, Lincoln, Volkswagen, Land Rover, Audi and finally Chrysler. Tesla was scored at 252 PP100, but was not ranked on the list because it did not match the study's award criteria, because Tesla does not license companies to contact owners in some US states.

This study has been conducted annually for the past 35 years, covering 184 specific errors in 9 main areas of cars: climate, driver assistance technology, driving experience, exterior, features/controls/displays. image, infotainment cluster, interior, powertrain, seating.

Lexus ranked highest in vehicle reliability, the second year in a row that Toyota's luxury brand ranked first; while Toyota ranked one place below, highest among popular brands. The Toyota Group, which includes Lexus, also won nine JD Power awards in the individual vehicle model segment. The three most progressive brands in improving vehicle defects are Porsche (reduced 33 PP100), Mercedes (reduced 22 PP100), Toyota (reduced 21 PP100).

Frank Hanley, JD Power's senior director of automotive standards, said the decline in vehicle reliability was "unusual," saying it could be due to the 2021 vehicles being produced in the US. a period of chaos in the global supply chain due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Besides, owners now keep their vehicles longer and do not change vehicles as often, leading to more errors. The average age of cars in the US is currently about 12 years.

In the study, the infotainment system was the item with the most problems, specifically 49.1 PP100, nearly double that of the second most problematic item, the exterior. Car owners encounter many errors related to Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connection, the vehicle's integrated voice recognition feature. In addition, warnings in the driver assistance system are also something that makes many users feel annoyed, such as lane change warnings, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking.

On the other hand, electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle owners experience more problems than those who own gasoline or hybrid vehicles. Electric vehicles have a PP100 index of 256, plug-in hybrids are 216, hybrids are 191, gasoline cars are 187. 39% of electric vehicle owners say they have changed tires in the past 12 months because they wear out faster than normal .
