Qualcomm announced to join the metaverse virtual universe, investing heavily in IoT, 5G

At MWC 2022, Qualcomm announced its expansion beyond mobile, with a strategy to provide technology for Connected Intelligent Edge devices in the Cloud and 5G worlds. Recently, in a meeting and sharing with the media, Mr. Thieu Phuong Nam - General Director of Qualcomm Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia talked more clearly about 5 areas in which Qualcomm will invest heavily in the near future.

Laptop

Along with the development of 5G and Cloud trends, applications on laptops will gradually change significantly. Today, 5G is more important than ever, and now all Qualcomm platforms have 5G connectivity. For example, Lenovo's ThinkPad X13s is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 chip.

Mr. Thieu Phuong Nam believes that in the future when PCs change, other applications will also change, like XR and metaverse. The laptop segment will have a strong transformation, not only at Qualcomm but also technology brands in the world.

"Many companies are now moving to the ARM platform because it brings the benefits of 5G and saves energy. In the future, there will be more laptop businesses using Qualcomm's chipsets and the audience that Qualcomm currently does. are aiming to include business and education," forecasted Mr. Nam.

Metaverse

At MWC, Qualcomm announced the new technology solution Snapdragon XR/VR. Currently, there are about 50 devices using Snapdragon XR/VR on the market. Qualcomm has partnered with Meta, Microsoft and Google for the direction of the virtual universe (metaverse). In the future, the development trend of metaverse is not only for social networks, but it will also be applied to industrial fields such as smart factories, smart cities, etc.

Car

Over the past five years, automotive has been Qualcomm's fastest-growing sector. Currently, many of the world's leading auto brands have partnered with Qualcomm to promote their products. The total value of contracts Qualcomm has signed with brands around the world for many years to come will reach 13 billion USD.

5G

Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) is the new trend that Qualcomm is focusing on. Qualcomm has collaborated with Ericsson and other carriers to research, thereby increasing coverage and promoting the successful deployment of mmWave in Vietnam. More than 150 devices not only including smartphones but also in other fields have been launched into the market.

The replacement of fiber optic cables with 5G mmWave for home Internet use is also a typical example of the current success of 5G mmWave applications. Currently, Qualcomm is working with Viettel to develop this application. With this application, the cost of using the Internet will be less and the family still has the same benefits as traditional fiber optic cable.

IoT

Qualcomm is also currently investing in industrial IoT such as smart cities and smart factories.

Not long ago, Qualcomm also announced the latest platform, Wi-Fi 7. Currently, Qualcomm is the first company in the world to produce Wi-Fi 7 products. Later this year, device makers will Start using Wi-Fi 7. Compared to Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 7 is 60% faster and uses 50% less power.

Wi-Fi 7 is a new wireless connection technology.
