Will NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series “Ada Lovelace” still use PCIe Gen 4?

NVIDIA Ada Lovelace ( AD102 )-based GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards coming later this year will probably still be happy with the PCIe Gen 4 protocol, according to rumors posted by kopite7kimi on Twitter. You also know that the RTX 40 Series will use a 16-pin 12VHPWR power supply, capable of providing up to 600 W of power. But this 12VHPWR standard is for PCIe Gen 5 VGAs , why does the RTX 40 Series stop at PCIe Gen 4 as rumored?

The current graphics card is communicating with the CPU via the PCIe Gen 4 protocol, which has a total bandwidth of 64 GBps and 32 GBps of bi-directional (bi-directional) bandwidth. The latest computing platforms from Intel and AMD support PCIe Gen 5, with twice the bandwidth of PCIe Gen 4 (128 GBps total, 64 GBps bi-directional). Although twice the bandwidth, it seems that even the upcoming high-end card models, more specifically the RTX 40 Series, still do not have a common voice with PCIe Gen 5. This is understandable when VGA for users. The current end-to-end network has not yet fully utilized the space of the PCIe Gen 4 interface. Meanwhile, the HPC (High Performance Computing) array and data center need large bandwidth to handle the huge amount of data. of the server. Therefore, if the rumors are true, then NVIDIA's decision is also reasonable, Hopper GPUwill support PCIe Gen 5 while Ada Lovelace is PCIe Gen 4.

Rumors also say that the structure of the FP32 core is not as simple as Ampere, NVIDIA will change the arrangement of CUDA cores in the Ada Lovelace architecture. The GeForce RTX 40 Series is likely to have a difference in FP32 units (integer and floating-point) leading to an increase in multipliers, computing power or simply creating a whole new type of core compared to with old architecture.
