How do drones make rain in Dubai?

In the UAE - specifically in Dubai - scientists have begun to tackle the high temperatures by generating their own rain. Vanguard reports, Dubai is currently using drones to fly towards the clouds and discharge electricity to create rain. The electrical charges cause the clouds to gather together to produce rain.

Drones helped create rain for the UAE.

This technology is called “cloud seeding” and is used to help increase annual rainfall. A $15 million project for this technique is being carried out by the UAE to help generate rain for the country. The technology was created by experts at the University of Reading in the UK.

Professor Maarten Ambaum, who worked on the project, said the UAE currently has enough clouds to create conditions that allow rain. "When the droplets merge and get big enough, they fall like rain," he said.

The UAE is also looking at methods of preserving rain that falls to the ground, rather than letting it evaporate. Currently, the country has about 130 dams and dikes with a capacity of 120 million cubic meters of water.

NCMS executive director Abdulla al-Mandoos said studies are being prepared to plan the construction of more dams and water protection, with the aim of directing rain "from the cloud to the aquifer". "We don't want to waste a single drop of water," he added.
